The Ford Transit vs. RAM ProMaster, What's the Difference?

Sometimes a full-size van is the best choice forhauling cargo and ferrying passengers. The Ford Transit and the Ram ProMaster offer both of thesecapabilities. However, the Ford Transit carries most of the advantage when theyare put on a head to head dwell. We here at Ken Pollock Ford Lincoln inBerwick, PA, is proud to take you through the two vans and help you decidewhich is best suitable to meet your needs.

Performance Differences

Performance is one of the most critical features considered when buying a van. Three different engines power the Ford Transit. These include a naturally aspirated 3.5-liter V-6 that offers 275 horsepower and 262 pound to feet of torque, an optional turbocharged 3.5-liter V-6 that generates 310 horsepower, and 410 pound to feet of torque and, finally, a third engine, a turbocharged 2.0-liter diesel four-cylinder. All these engines are connected to a 10-speed automatic transmission that offers smooth driving.

On the other hand, buyers have only one power plant to choose from on the RAM ProMaster. A 3.6-liter V-6 engine provides 280 horsepower and 260 pound to feet of torque, which is comparatively less potent than the turbocharged V-6 on the Transit. The six-speed automatic transmission is not as efficient as the 10-speed version in the Transit.

The Transit gives more towing power than the Promaster as well. The Transit can tow up to 7,500 pounds while the ProMaster tows 6,800 pounds, which is significantly lower. Moreover, the Transit makes it from 0 to 60mph in just 6.8 seconds compared to 8.1 seconds by the Promaster.

However, the Ram ProMaster has a slightly higher payload capability. It can carry up to 4,680 pounds compared to 4,530 pounds supported by the Transit. However, this is all in theory. The engine power offered by the ProMaster is quite low and ferrying the maximum payload would be a challenge.

From these observations, the Transit comes out on top thanks to the number of engines available, power output, and towing capacity.

Interior and Comfort Comparison

Both the ProMaster and the Transit offer an overall design that is reasonably attractive though the Promaster has several drawbacks. It is sold with only front seats, limiting the passenger capacity to two, and the buyer has to find a third party to install. Meanwhile, the Ford transit comes with factory-installed seating for up to 15 passengers.

In terms of noise, the Transit's cabin is quiet and is shielded from road noise while the Promaster is not as capable.

Infotainment and Connectivity

Both the Transit and the Promaster come with infotainment and connectivity features such as Bluetooth connectivity, SiriusXM, and navigation. However, the Transit comes with more features such as standard Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, satellite radio, and Wi-Fi hotspot.

Both the Transit and the ProMaster come with a four-speaker sound system.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

The safety of the driver and passenger is one of the essential features. As the saying goes, safety first. In terms of safety, the ProMaster is completely outmatched by the Transit. While both are equipped with a backup camera and rear parking sensors, the ProMaster isn't available with safety features such as blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assist, forward collision warning, and adaptive cruise control. This makes the Transit safer for drivers and passengers than the ProMaster, as it comes standard with all these features.

Trim Levels

The Ford Transit comes with two trims and eight different configurations. These are XL and the XLT. The following are the configurations available:

  • The Ford Transit XL rear-wheel-drive low roof van
  • The Ford Transit XL rear-wheel-drive medium roof van
  • The Ford Transit XL AWD low roof van
  • The Ford Transit XL AWD medium roof van
  • The Ford Transit XLT rear-wheel-drive low roof van
  • The Ford Transit XLT rear-wheel-drive medium roofvan
  • The Ford Transit XLT AWD low roof van
  • The Ford Transit XLT AWD medium roof van

The ProMaster comes in three different trims the1500, 2500, and 3500. The Ford Transit comes with more options to choose from, making it easier to find the perfect one for your needs.

The Ford Transit and RAM ProMaster are both on top of their class when it comes to full side cargo/passenger vans. However, the Ford Transit comes on top in almost every feature, both standard and available on both vans.
